"Karmic" may be as well strong of a word to describe the friendship between
Rachel Allen and , but they may well have some type of coincidental
connection.
Originally, the two met in 1999 at a Benjamins concert at the now-defunct
Globe. In the time, Allen was a 17-year-old living in West Allis, but she
definitely wanted to find out her friends' pop / punk band at the North Avenue
venue, so she asked her dad to take her. And he did.
"My dad is awesome. He was the 'dad in the East Side,'" says Allen. "He and I
have constantly had music in typical."
Zimmerman,furniture
outlet stores, who was a drummer for the band Camden in the time, stopped in
to view the show, too.
"The Globe was a clubhouse for musicians," says Zimmerman. "Our pals were the
bartenders, our friends were the bands."
During the concert, Zimmerman met and conversed with Allen along with the two
continued to run into one another by way of music and mutual good friends for
the subsequent decade. When Allen took a job at Sabbatic, wholesale
furniture outlet, 700 S. 2nd St., she began to view Zimmerman regularly and
their friendship deepened.
Unfortunately, as Allen says, "stupid sh-t occurs in pairs" and such was the
case this past March beginning when Zimmerman who's a tour manager for musician
Eric Benet believed he was getting complications from asthma.
He sooner or later went to the ER at Colombia-St. Mary's, expecting to be in
the hospital for a handful of hours. Turns out, Zimmerman had pneumonia and so
much liquid around his right lung that he necessary to undergo surgery.
"I was within the hospital for two weeks," says Zimmerman.
A couple of days later, Allen went to see a medical professional due to the
fact she believed she had stomach flu. As an alternative, she discovered out she
had cancer in her intestines. Allen was admitted to Elmbrook Memorial Hospital
and underwent surgery.
Both Zimmerman and Allen had been shocked by the severity of their illnesses
and while within the hospital, the two had been texting one another as their
mutual close friends split their time in between bedsides.
"Michelle (Hoff) would come here and knit and friends like Libby (Merline)
would go between spending time with me and Biju," says Allen. "In common, I was
overwhelmed by the love and assistance from people today. I believed the
majority of my friends would say, 'see ya in six weeks' after they identified
out I was sick, but instead, they have been f-cking remarkable. Casseroles,
calls, presents of aid."
Most of Zimmerman's and Allen's close friends are connected to what they
refer to as "The Block" a handful of block radius around 2nd Street in Walker's
Point with Sabbatic and Tin Widow, the bar across the street, arguably at the
heart of your Block.
"There is something definitely cool and supportive regarding the folks right
here. Milwaukee needs additional of this," says Allen.
Zimmerman has lived and hung out around the Block for 10 years.
"My buddy Diane (Dowland) initially named it 'Biju's Block,'" says Zimmerman.
"It was kind of a joke on me, due to the fact by way of my job I travel all
worldwide, but when I'm at residence, I normally remain around precisely the
same two or 3 blocks."
Recently, to contribute to Allen's and Zimmerman's medical bills, close
friends planned a fundraising party, aptly named, ""
